Six attributes of good 'leadership' in aged care

This is likely a longer piece than usual, but I think important as we every last consider the place of leadership mid-way through the term of naming of the Head of state Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

I let been asked many times o'er the days as a CEO to define leading. There are of course quotes such as "It is an art, rather than a science". Or "You tail tell if you are a drawing card when there is someone following tail end you". What seems to be true is that you are not born to be a leader, and leadership is not achieved from a one-day development training academic session. All the same, we can maturate atomic number 3 leadership day-after-day – and indeed we must. And leading is about people, whilst management is about tasks and things.

Merely even those small truisms supra do not do justice to this thing called leadership. Most of the States can likely recollect our own examples of where we have experienced poor, or ineffective leadership. We may even now be wincing as we read, recognising our possess lack of skills in a leadership office at some time in the past. We give the axe also likely recall and acknowledge some alright experience of leadership that was such a joy to be party to.

Good leadership is a thing of beauty to feel. Such like a diamond. A diamond has so many qualities and when cut well, are a thing of beauty to behold. IT is hardly surprising that "diamonds are a miss's best friend". As the following picture shows, even a so called six sided baseball diamond has such more to offer than the "simple" sise sided cuts.

So it is with leadership.

I furnish downstairs just six sides, operating theater attributes, of leadership that I think if practiced (wellspring) every twenty-four hour period will non only atten us to be better performing leaders but will drive better functioning in our organisations. I am certain we can all accept that leaders is more complex than these six, but these are a sound introduction. The attributes are provided in character set decree only for gadget:

  • Capableness – is nigh organism equipped to do the work at hand. IT's about having the right tools and skillset for the job. Get laid your limits and continue to learn. Develop yourself – either through and through recognised institutional academic learning, or through guided coaching development. Sometimes a intermixture of both tooshie work for you and your team. Your organisation necessarily you to be fit and ready for the challenging tasks of today and tomorrow.
  • Character – is about maintaining wholeness in one's individual amidst the busy-ness and distractions that we all face. In one case asked about which was more probative – scheme in war, or character of the soul – battle seasoned General Geographical region Schwarzkopf, the senior officer of the allied forces in the first Iraq war said – "As a military man, one must be good at strategy. But if you make to choose between scheme and character, take character, because your display/animation of integrity will always render, and at the end of every war you deliver your own character to live with". With the electric current Aged Care timbre and Safety Royal Commission; the recently commenced Disability Royal Delegacy; and the immediate past House Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Intimate Blackguard, and the Ruler Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Business enterprise Services Industry; the common thread that comes through and through is lack of character, OR character flaws – of institutions, people, and processes. We cannot escape this. We all indigence to be and do better. And as leaders we need to set apart the good example – now! In our aged tutelage services our deal recipients and their families and precious ones deserve it, our staff need it (and we have the anticipation that they will practice integrity of religious service manner of speaking), and we moldiness set and uphold the highest standards of unity of character. We should be living out good character every day.

These six attributes of leadership impermanent collectively buns make masterful team dynamic and empiricism organisational culture. Drill them daily for your rice beer and for that of your organisation.

There is unrivalled more attribute that I believe important for us as leaders. If the diamond cut to that lops the top of the ball field off as shown in Fig.3 above did not leave a flattened top, but were hack to a zenith breaker point, I name that zenith the:
Calling or Centre – the impulsive force that "compels" you to lead and attend to. For Pine Tree State it is my belief in Jesus Redeemer as saviour of the world that drives ME to serve. But, this blog piece is not intended to be an self-deprecating proposition for the Christian faith tradition. Indeed, I really like it that people can represent part of a faith tradition, whatsoever organized religion custom; I fair-minded come about to stick to Jesus. Only I enjoy speaking to others about their faith and beliefs. Having a faith tradition gives us something outside of ourselves to focus on and rest upon. I powerfully encourage you to strive to discern your calling or centre, name it, acknowledge IT, and develop any of its finer principles, values, tenets, and attributes into your leadership role. This recognition could be very helpful for you, and those you lead, peculiarly when times are tough and demanding much of you in physical and aroused energy and intelligence.
